1967年，“新好莱坞电影”的出现，改变了行之多年的大片厂垄断制度，更多贴近现实生活和年轻人思想感情的电影出现，使好莱坞电影从纯粹的“逃避现实”消遣品逐渐变成“反映现实”的艺术品。在这个电影变革里，达斯廷. 霍夫曼(Dustin Hoffman)的成名作《毕业生》是一部举足轻重的代表作。
迈克．尼科尔斯(Mike Nichols)执导的本片，以一鸣惊人的姿势出现。剧情描述本恩的父母忙着筹备庆祝他毕业的家庭晚会，但本恩却对未来生活感到茫然。来客中的鲁宾逊太太对这个小伙子很感兴趣，不断挑逗本恩，但被拒绝。可是日子如此无聊，不久后他开始了同鲁宾逊太太幽会，同时他也爱上了她的女儿伊莱恩。鲁宾逊太太知道真相后坚决反对，并想尽办法拆散两人的交往。本恩终于找到机会向伊莱恩表白了爱意，并坦承了自己的坠落，只是没说出那个夫人的名字。伊莱恩原谅了他，但鲁宾逊太太的震怒使伊莱恩猜到了一切。她伤心地决定与别人结婚。本恩得知这一消息，不顾一切向教堂冲去，他要尽最后力量挽回爱人的心。
影片的原声带由戴夫．格鲁辛（Dave Grusin）与保罗．西蒙 （Paul Simon）合作编写，前者负责音乐部份，后者则负责片中多首插曲，包括脍炙人口的“The Sound Of Silence”、“Scaebrough Fair”、“Mrs. Robinson”等，当年都是令人朗朗上口的畅销曲。格鲁辛是著名爵士乐钢琴手，但配乐风格颇为多样化，本片偏向清新的民谣风，颇能反映入世未深的大学生心境。西蒙则是著名民谣二重唱“Simon And Garfunkel”的作曲主将，历年参与电影配乐的作品只有5部，《成名之路》（Almost Famous）是最新作品。

现在只要一提到《毕业生》人们就会在最短的时间内反应出Dustin Hoffman这位大师级的表演艺术家的名字。这位大师在演艺道路上最坚实的一步就是这部67年出品的《毕业生》。
在这部电影里，刚出道不久的Dustin出演了一位刚跨出大学校门社会青年，而正当亲友们期待着这位优等生美好光辉的前景时，而他自己却陷入了一片迷茫。他不知道自己会干什么该想干什么，甚至开始怀疑之前所学何用。在一个金发妇人的百般挑逗下Dustin开始了一段发生在母女间奇异的不伦关系.....
六十年代是美国历史上一个动荡和激情的年代，经过五十年代经济的高速发展富裕的美国在满足物质需求的同时却失去了精神上的寄托。摇滚、毒品、新左派、种族歧视、性解放、民权运动.....充斥着美国的大街小巷，与此同时也有着一大批如男主角一样面对纷乱的社会而失去目标的年轻人。第一次担纲男主角的Dustin对这个时期年轻人的内心世界抓的非常透彻，从那种刚出校门的年轻人的青涩，到后来的那种充满心中的反道德反传统的斗志，无一不是当时年轻人的真实写照。
除了Dstin Hoffman的表演之外，这部电影最大的亮点就是他的导演和配乐。这里我想先要说一点，通常我们都会把The Sound Of Silence看作为《毕业生》的主题曲，其实这部电影的主题曲是另一首非常有名的也是由Simon&Garfunkel合作的Mrs.Robinson，根据BMI Mrs.Robinson（美国广播音乐公司）统计这首歌在美国的电台播放次数超过600万次，排在播放次数最多的歌曲第七名。在片中这段音乐出现在男主角驾着跑车赶往女孩婚礼的路上，两把吉他配合着跑车引擎的轰鸣表现着男主人公纷乱而急切的心绪。如果我们仔细观察，随着Dustin在途中停车在各地询问女孩下落这支曲子片中也暂停了几次，但每次上路之后重新拨响的吉他让人感觉一次比一次急，直到车没了油抛锚在路边，吉他模拟着发动机停转嘎然而止。
